We at Lady Lori remain always fascinated with the work that our great friends at the Turkana Basin Institute do in the field of researching early human fossils and like to showcase their work
Founded by renowned paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey and Stony Brook University in 2005, The Turkana Basin Institute (TBI) is an international, multi-disciplinary organization supporting scientific research in the Turkana Basin region of northern Kenya.
It provides logistical support to researchers, greatly facilitating fieldwork in this remote and extensive area of northern Kenya and also aims to provide a valuable online resource to a broader community interested in the region.
A major commitment of TBI is to safeguard the extensive fossil deposits in the region through engagement with the local communities. In addition to the employment and training of individuals from the local community, the TBI community program includes the provision of student bursaries and scholarships, teacher salaries at local schools and a mobile outreach health service
Examples of research projects associated with the Turkana Basin Institute are the ‘Island Africa Project’, ‘The Koobi Fora Project’, ‘The Later Prehistory of West Turkana’ and the ‘Omo Kibish Project’. Read more about these projects here
