The Danakil Depression is a desert basin which lies in the Danakil Desert in north-eastern Ethiopia and southern Eritrea,

“Due to this volcanic activity the floor of the depression is composed of lava, mostly basalt. The continuous process of volcanism results in the occurrence of major minerals including potash, sulfur, salt, bentonite, and gypsum. This can be seen in the incredible colours of Dallol. In addition to this are active volcanoes continuously spurting lava, the most active of which is called Erte Ale.
Dallol currently holds the record for the highest average temperature for an inhabited location on planet. It is an extremely remote region with no roads made even more inaccessible by the danger of armed militia from Eritrea that as recently as January 2012 killed and wounded a group of tourists on the rim of Erte Ale.”
