‘Home Again’ by Michael Kiwanuka

‘Home again’ is the debut album of young British soul artist Michael Kiwanuka, winner of UK’s ‘BBC Sound of 2012 poll’.

The Londoner, who was raised by Ugandan parents, is doing big business in the UK since the launch of this album.

“Smoothly simmering with retro jazz flutes, earnest folk guitar, vintage soul vocals and “come her me, brother” lyrics ‘Home again’ is more like the sound of 1972” The style is not original but he’s got real soul and very good songs”

Initially Kiwanuka was worried that it wasn’t cool for an African kids to enjoy the sensitve singer-songwriter music to which he was drawn. He started off getting jobs backing rappers and r&b artists, but later decided to turn his hand to what he really loved.

“Despite its lyrical portrait of a constant worrier who feels lost and lonely, Home Again is a remarkably assured and sophisticated album. From its impeccably upholstered brass and string arrangements to its stripped-back emotions; its complex grooves to its easy melodies”
