Mozambican artist Gonçalo Mabunda creates sculptures out of deactivated weapons from the 1977-1992 civil war.

In his sculptures, Mabunda is interested in using objects with strong political connotations which carry collective memory. Most of his furniture-sculpture is made from deactivated weapons that were stock-piled and hidden during the long civil war that divided Mozambique and that international organizations are still trying to recover fifteen years later.

Some of his amazing works were recently on show at Jack Bell Gallery in London and Mabunda has also previously shown at New York’s Museum of Art and Design, London’s Hayward Gallery, the Pompidou Centre and Johannesburg Art Gallery.
