Africa Utopia

Senegalese singer and human-rights campaigner Baaba Maal is curating a month long celebration at the Southbank Centre in London consisting of a mix of music, art, dance, film and discussion.

During July, the festivities form part of the Southbank Centre’s Festivl of the World with Mastercard.

Baaba Maal believes in the power of music for social change.

“African music has its own market, its own realities. There, music is a social event, not a contractual one. You play and people give you cattle, give you horses, give you land. I want to put an African village on stage.”

Other performers to be seen are Angelique Kidjo, Oumou Sangare, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, Sura Susso and Lemn Sissay but to name a few.
